Research

The goal of this website is to provide the public with a compact guide to finding information on the topic of child exploitation in Victorian Era France at the Paris Opera Ballet. My research focuses on the culture and tradition of abuse that was not only allowed by the ballet but also normalized in the Parisian and European culture of the time. In conducting my research on this subject, I found that the information necessary for completing my project could only be found in academic papers, a handful of articles and book reviews, and three separate books about one specific victim of this abuse (two of which were fictionalized versions of her life).

In light of the #MeToo movement and today's culture of holding abusers accountable, this information could help future dancers, historians, instructors, and parents to make important connections about the ballet world today and the ballet world of bygone eras, which could in turn help us to further modernize ballet for future generations.
